Erwin de VRIES (Paramaribo 1929 - Paramaribo 2018)
Sculptor and painter.
Education: In 1952 Erwin de Vries completes the training as an art teacher at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. From 1958 to 1961 he attended classes at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Career including participation in the Sonsbeek sculpture park (1966), two solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (1970, 1998) and the purchase of his work by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He also designed the National Slavery Monument, which was completed in 2002 in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam.
In addition to sculptures, De Vries makes numerous paintings, drawings and (bronze) portraits.
De Vries's formal language is related to the language of COBRA. His work is exuberant in colour, expressive and directly painted. The human figure and in particular the woman are central to his work. The women in his paintings are portrayed in passionate and often erotic poses with powerful brushstrokes. Sensuality and dynamism is what characterizes his work: organic lines on the canvas and fiercely sculpted figures in bronze. In his work he combines figurative with stylized abstract forms. Erwin de Vries is known as a prolific, temperamental artist.
