Frans (Franciscus Wilhelmus Josephus) BOSEN, born in Amsterdam 27-1-1891 and died in Haarlem 29-11-1949. Graphic artist, draftsman, poster designer, woodcut maker, linocutter, photographer. Education: the Amsterdam State School of Applied Arts and the State Academy of Visual Arts Amsterdam. In the early 1920s Bosen joined the Amsterdam printing company 'De Brakke Grond'. He was one of the first in the Netherlands to focus on designing film posters. Bosen used the linoleum cut for the printing of posters. He made dozens of posters for well-known American and German entertainment films such as Robin Hood from 1922, The Thief of Baghdad (The Thief of Baghdad) from 1924, The Phantom of the Opera (The Phantom of the Opera) from 1925 and Faust from 1926. Frans Bosen also designed advertising printing. His film posters and other advertising materials are now in the poster archive of the Nederlands Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. The film posters he designed are also in the archive of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
