Gerrit KOMRIJ (Winterswijk 1944 – Amsterdam 2012)
Gerrit Jan Komrij was a Dutch poet and connoisseur of Dutch poetry, writer, feuilletonist, translator, critic, polemicist and playwright. In 1993 he was awarded the PC Hooft Prize for his reflective prose. He was the Poet of the Fatherland from 2000 to 2004. Komrij was known for his virtuoso and colourful use of language and was a feared polemicist. After finishing high school in Winterswijk, Komrij moved to Amsterdam in 1963. He broke off his Dutch studies after six months. From 1967 he worked as a translator. In 1968 his debut as a poet was published, after which a stream of translations, essays, reviews and poems saw the light of day.
