Isaac ISRAELS (Amsterdam 1865 - The Hague 1934)
Isaac Israëls was a Dutch impressionist painter. He inherited the painting profession from his father Jozef Israels and his talent was soon discovered at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. Together with his father, he often painted in Scheveningen, where he made beach scenes. He later moved to Amsterdam with George Breitner, where the duo captured fleeting moments from city life as 'Amsterdam Impressionists'. From 1903, Israëls stayed in Paris, London and the Dutch East Indies. He had previously been impressed by France when he saw the works of the impressionists Degas and Manet while traveling with his parents. Back in the Netherlands, he took over his father's workshop in The Hague. Israels' work can be seen in the Municipal Museum in The Hague and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, among others. Exhibitions about his work are also often organized. In 2008 there was a duo exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague about Jozef and Isaac Israels and in 2012 5 museums in The Hague organized exhibitions about Israel's activities in The Hague. As an Amsterdam impressionist with a clear French influence, Israels left a clear mark on Dutch painting.
