Jeroen Henneman (1943)

Jeroen Henneman (1943)

Painter, Sculptor, Graphic artist, Draftsman

Jeroen HENNEMAN (Haarlem 1942)

Sculptor, painter, graphic artist

Education:

Jeroen Henneman was educated at the Applied Arts School, Amsterdam and the Institute of Fine Arts, Antwerp and lives and works in Amsterdam.

Over the years, Jeroen Henneman's work has developed in a painterly direction. He used to make canvases that seemed more drawn than painted. Familiar themes such as light-emitting windows in the darkness and floating geometric shapes and their fictitious shadows have remained. Other characteristics such as clarity, a tendency towards the surreal, an ironic element, mystery and an unmistakable melancholy remain.

Architecture regularly crops up in Henneman's work. In earlier versions, the buildings were observed from afar. The recent paintings take a closer look at the architecture: the regular pattern of windows in the facade of a skyscraper or a group of buildings where the angular interspaces play with light. These tightly painted patterns, in which the emphasis is on contour and rhythm, completely fill the canvas.

One of the developments in Jeroen Henneman's work is the so-called 'standing drawings'. For these upright drawings, Henneman started from pencil drawings and applied a technique that had not previously been used in the visual arts. The lines of these drawings are transferred one by one onto wood, sawn out and then stapled together. The works of art, no thicker than a few centimeters, suggest a large spatial effect. In this way, the viewer is simultaneously confronted with the three-dimensional aspect of an object and with the flat surface of a drawing. The movement, an important aspect in Henneman's oeuvre, takes on an unexpected effect, because the objects can be seen as a drawing and the drawings as an object. Jeroen Henneman's signature remains clearly visible: the wooden constructions are deliberately not finished smoothly in order to retain the character of the drawn line.

The standing drawings express a consistent development in Henneman's work, which has always been aimed at visual clarity. Jeroen Henneman is an artist of a precise thematic repertoire consisting of simple forms and objects of the things that surround him every day.
