Called (The) Lampongs in colonial times, it is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the southernmost part of the island of Sumatra and borders the provinces of Bengkulu and South Sumatra.
The population of Lampung is 6,654,354 (2000 census). A large part (75%) of the current population of Lampung are descendants of migrants from Java, Madoera and Bali. These immigrants came of their own accord, in search of agricultural land, but also as part of the government's transmigration program, for which Lampung was one of the first and most important destinations.
The bay where Lampung is located was called Emperor's Bay in the colonial era.
