Maaike BRAAT-Rolvink (Arnhem 1907 - Amsterdam 1992)
Monumental artist, wall painter, painter, watercolourist, etcher, lithographer, maker of woodcuts, draftsman, ceramist. Maaike Braat lived and worked in Arnhem until 1931, where she obtained a certificate of drawing training after high school. She lived for a year in Paris from 1930 to 1931 as a pupil of the painter Gaston Balande. She received the ?silver medal from the city of Paris? (in the category ?watercolours?). Back in Amsterdam she married the sculptor Leo Braat. Maaike Braat's work is averse to any fashion or art movement. She has often been described as a specialist in mountains, snow and ice, who regularly sought it close to the Arctic Circle and not, like most landscape artists, in the Mediterranean light. She was inspired by the Dutch polder land, the IJsselmeer coast and the thin, lonely heights of the Norwegian mountains or the Dolomites. She did not accurately portray the landscapes, but records their own characteristic, the essence. Quote from Maaike Braat: ?I always want to be there, where land, air and water come together. I have to have a view and I often make it wider than it actually is. I work best under difficult conditions, in the worst cold and wind and rain: I have to overcome resistance. I need a long run up?.
