Marijke VERHOEF (Groningen 1946)
Writer, Painter, Printmaker
Education:
Marijke Verhoef was educated at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven and the Free Academy in The Hague.
She lives and works in The Hague
The two worlds come together in Marijke Verhoef's prints, drawings and paintings. Geometric surfaces are colored with a ferocious handwriting and alternated with uniformly colored, often mechanically printed forms. Bold geometric shapes are placed over delicate line drawings. She often combines drawing with printing techniques such as lithography and screen printing in one and the same work. This further emphasizes the synthesis between the emotional and the rational side of her work.
The work of Marijke Verhoef seems abstract. Yet in many cases reality is its starting point. In particular, she is inspired by her many and distant travels. Maps and routes planned or followed by the artist are often incorporated in her line drawings. The geometric-looking shapes can also refer to objects from reality, such as in a series of vases she made. However, Verhoef's work is particularly interesting as an abstract composition because she manages to bring the opposing principles together in a clear and direct manner.
