Pieter HOLSTEIN (Enschede 1934)
Painter, graphic artist, sculptor, photographer
Education:
Holstein was educated at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York from 1954 to 1957.
After graduating, Holstien worked at a graphic studio in Paris. Later Holstein lived and worked alternately in Amsterdam, Finsterwolde (Groningen), New York and France.
Holstein is known for his colored etchings. He also made artist's books and drawings for the weekly magazine Vrij Nederland. Holstein creates figurative images of interiors, landscapes, symbols and characters. His etchings sometimes have an absurdist tone and contain ironic commentary on art and perception. Since 1978 Holstein has also made paintings, mostly of dreamlike landscapes. In recent years, Holstein has been evaluating more towards the aboriginal style with faces and masks. He taught at the Academy of Art and Design in Den Bosch and at the Academy of Art and Industry in Enschede. Until 1985 he was senior lecturer in 'free graphics' at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.
Exhibitions and prizes:
Holstein has exhibited at home and abroad. In 1992 Holstein received the Sandberg Prize. In 1999 there was a major exhibition of his work in the Rietveld pavilion of the Zonnehof museum in Amersfoort.
