Sjoerd BAKKER (1943 - 2022)

Born in Amsterdam in 1943. Died in January 2022.
Course:
Bakker trained at both the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.
He lives and works in Amsterdam.
Sjoerd Bakker's work arises from his fascination with Southeast Asia and Japan. If this is not reflected in the subject of his art, then it is evident in the simplicity of form and color: his work is often reminiscent of old Japanese prints. Nature in Japan is particularly inspiring, where Bakker first visited years ago because he had received a travel grant for it. Nature often comes together with culture in his art, through a trace of human presence. Similarly, a major theme in Bakker's work is the contrast, or convergence, of temporality and eternity.

Bakker's work has been exhibited in America, the Netherlands, Spain, Japan and Thailand, among others.
