Valerius De SAEDELEER (Aalst 1867 - Leupegem 1941)
De Saedeleer was a Flemish painter of landscapes. He is buried in the municipal cemetery of Aalst. De Saedeleer received his first artistic training at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts from Théodore-Joseph Canneel. He mainly painted the Lys region and the Flemish Ardennes and was one of the most important figures of the first group of the Latem School. This movement is also called "urban or mystical symbolism". Valerius De Saedeleer lived from November 1895 to October 1898 in Lissewege, in a small farm along the Ter Doeststraat. From 1898 to 1908 he lived in Sint-Martens-Latem. The Leie bend there is the subject of some of his paintings. He then moved to the villa Tynlon in Etikhove, where an artists' colony was established with him as the central figure. He left that house in 1937. The Groeninge Museum owns a painting by him, 'Entr_e de village', which he painted in June 1896, commissioned by Louis Dhondt, secretary-brewer in Lissewege. The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent and the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens also keep canvases by De Saedeleer. A path was named after him in Lissewege and a street in Aalst.
