Wim Zurne (1953)

Wim ZURNE (Bemmel 1953)

graphic artist

Wim Zurné became known for his graphic landscapes; Sober color etchings in which the artist depicted the environment in which he lived with strong, sometimes rough gestures. The skin, the microcosm of the etching plate, was made visible by the artist in the light of that classical theme to which the attention of artists is always drawn: the landscape.

Later, Zurné camouflages the original performance and invites the viewer to sharpen their own imagination. By increasingly abstracting his subjects, space is created for new starting points. The landscape disappears and makes way for more imaginary sources. In all cases, the landscape is not pure nature. In technical-looking constructions, Zurné makes visible human intervention in the landscape. In his abstracted landscapes there is often talk of a 'dynamic balance': the precarious balance in which man and nature try to find each other.

Man has literally made his appearance in recent work. Figures, mostly nudes, are prominent. In some cases nature even seems to have completely disappeared, or it must be the dog that barks at humans.

The etchings, in which Zurné uses several processed zinc plates, are characteristic of his graphics and the traditional way in which he works. The deeply carved lines and aquatints form a grid of imaginary details and fragments of compositions. In addition to etching, Zurné has always painted. He uses the same sober color scheme and drawing-like lines as in his graphic work. Zurné has also proven to be a good craftsman in the field of painting.

Wim Zurné was educated at the Rietveld Academy for Visual Arts, Arnhem.
