Wout van HEUSDEN (Rotterdam 1896 - Rotterdam 1982)
Wout van Heusden was particularly fond of his graphics (etchings, lithographs and woodcuts), but was also a painter. He was the son of a working-class family and also worked as a house painter.
In the 1950s he made large etchings in which, in combination with aquatint technique, he processed spontaneously created spots into a mysterious interplay of lines. The big breakthrough for Wout van Heusen came in 1962 when he was given a retrospective of his graphics in the Boymans van Beuningen. His graphics were more highly regarded than his paintings, but Wout van Beuningen was a hermit who had little contact with other artists or gallery owners. He developed a style all his own and paid little attention to the prevailing opinion about art.
Wout van Heuden was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts, Rotterdam.
