Course:
Matthijs Röling trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. After this he continued his education at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. In addition to his artistry, Röling became a teacher at the Minerva Academy in Groningen in 1972, where he still teaches today. Matthijs Röling was previously a member of both the artist group De Ploeg and the Artist Group Nu.
Röling is considered a figurehead for contemporary figurative Dutch painting. As a teacher and artist, Röling attaches great importance to the craft and traditional aspects of this. With this he also left a clear mark on Dutch figurative painting in general, and on Northern Realism in particular. Yet Röling's painting style cannot be contained under one heading. He mainly paints illusionistic, detailed paintings with small brushes. He also makes work that closely resembles impressionism, but his monumental painting style is especially evident in his wall paintings. He often made these wall paintings in collaboration with colleague Wout Muller. The themes in Matthijs Röling's oeuvre are diverse: still lifes, portraits, nudes, landscapes and mythological scenes.
