Taco Mesdag (1829-1902)

Taco Mesdag (Groningen, September 21, 1829 - The Hague, August 4, 1902) was a Dutch banker and painter. Mesdag, son of the Groninger banker Klaas Mesdag and Johanna Willemina van Giffen, worked like his younger brother Hendrik Willem Mesdag in the banking business of his family. Like Hendrik, Taco eventually chose painting as a profession. He was taught by, among others, Paul Gabri_l. Mesdag is best known as the painter of the Drenthe landscape. The Mesdag brothers played an important role in the Hague painting society Pulchri Studio, of which Hendrik was chairman and Taco treasurer for many years. Mesdag married the painter Geesje van Calcar, who came from Hoogezand. Much of his work was donated by his widow to the Groninger Museum. A special Museum Mesdagvancalcar has been set up on the internet with images of work by Mesdag and Van Calcar and other artists of the Hague School.source; wikipedia , rkd , shone , jacobs
