Founded in 1920 - dissolved in 1930
Art Deco is a movement related to the Art Nouveau that was mainly present in the 1920s and 1930s. The movement takes its name from the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco aimed to elevate industrial design to 'high art'. New materials were used to create decorative patterns that could be done both by machine and by hand.
Art Deco is characterized by streamlined, elongated and symmetrical designs. Simple shapes are used that are derived from nature and are therefore inherently aerodynamic as well as aesthetically pleasing. This technical efficiency meant that the Art Deco style could be applied to many types of design: buildings, interiors, furniture, utensils, jewelry, fashion, illustrations, means of transport, all types of design were addressed by the Art Deco movement.
