Fundamental Painting
Fundamental painting is a movement in the visual arts of the 1970s. What is characteristic of fundamental painting is that it is abstract and has no relation to anything outside the work of art itself. The method of painting is central to fundamental painting. The essence of painting is sought. The artists are engaged in researching aspects such as format, size, colour, line, materials, texture, shape, etc. Often works are created in series with minimal mutual differences. Many works of fundamental painting have a monochromatic character. The visual language in the artworks is cool, abstract and geometrical. Fundamental painting is therefore related to geometric abstraction, hard-edge and op-art.
