Founded in 1870 - dissolved in 1880
Post-Impressionism encompasses several style experiments that arose from Impressionism. The artists of post-impressionism wanted to break away from impressionism. They rejected the Impressionist focus on optical perception, preferring to express emotion and symbolism in the painting. This was often done through simplified use of color and shapes. In this they were inspired by Japanese printing.
