Transavantguardia, or transavantgarde, is the Italian version of neo-expressionism. The movement responded to the rise of conceptual art. The Transavantgarde marked a return to figurative art and symbolism. Their colourful, sensual and dramatic work expresses a real pleasure in the rediscovery of the tangible and expressive aspects of the painting material.
