Alexander Ver Huell (1822-1897) was een bijzonder man in de negentiende-eeuwse cultureel-literaire wereld. Met zijn humoristische weergave van het Leidse studentenleven in woord en beeld werd hij bij een groot publiek bekend. Ver Huell behoort, samen met humorist Jan Kneppelhout, tot de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de romantische stroming in het Leidse studentenleven.Vanaf 1844 publiceerde Ver Huell verschillende verhalen, onder andere in de Studenten-Almanak, maar hij maakte vooral naam als tekenaar van karikaturale schetsen. In 1840 werd hij door Kneppelhout – beter bekend onder zijn pseudoniem Klikspaan – gevraagd als illustrator voor diens Studenten-typen. Ook andere uitgaven van eigen hand, zoals Zoo zijn er! en Op het ijs, bleven niet onopgemerkt. Met de laatstgenoemde uitgave, waaruit schetsen in het Franse blad l’ Illustration werden gepubliceerd, verwierf hij internationale bekendheid. Bron: Geheugen van Nederland.
