Supported by a number of fellow painters, including Jan Sierhuis, he followed his feeling, the path he had in mind stood. In the oeuvre of Anton Martineau there are 'narrative' elements. Newspapers, letters, shoes, everyday objects, just like love, eroticism and fear, form his themes. From small ink drawings he starts his way and continues his endless search which seems to have no end because, as he himself claims, the work is never finished. Anton Martineau has built up an impressive oeuvre over the years. Paintings, drawings and many hundreds of poems, they are the result of a passionate life. His paintings form the focal point. Explosively and painted with a lot of contrasting black, they show the relationship between man and woman and in a broader sense the relationship of a man with his environment. Whether he has a model sit on a couch, paints portraits or still lifes, his works always bear witness to a great emotional charge. Man is depicted as a personality with many faces; fear, joy and amazement, a range of emotions in one and the same canvas. He is also passionate as a painter and a draftsman. Often quick sketches precede his work in paint. He throws nothing away during the process of creation. Fortunately, because his drawings also fascinate and amaze.
