Ben Oldenhof (Nijmegen, 1955)
Ben Oldenhof (1955, Nijmegen) cuts shapes from steel plates with a free hand, as if he is drawing. He welds these shapes together at a few points to form larger objects that seem to float and dance airily. This effect is enhanced by the high pedestals on which he places the sculptures. He lets the sculptures rust outside until they have a deep brown color. For this new series of sculptures, Oldenhof draws inspiration from nature. You can vaguely recognize birds, butterflies or flowers in these lyrical, cheerful works. These sculptures are beautiful in any interior, but are also very suitable as garden objects: "When they are outside, they become more and more beautiful," says Oldenhof. Ben Oldenhof was born in Nijmegen in 1955. He spent his youth in Mook, a small village in North Limburg, where he started making objects with all kinds of materials at a young age. After experimenting with ceramics for a while, he left for Amsterdam to follow an education as an artist at the Rietveld Academy. Since graduating, he has had a studio in Amsterdam where he makes sculptures in many different styles and sizes from a variety of materials, mostly steel, ranging from large commissions to small, playful objects.
