Corneille - Variations on some lines, 1959

Ink on paper, 1959, signed and dated upper right. Very beautiful work by the Cobra painter who was a guest artist at the Revue Bokuzin in January 1954 and who had the Japanese Master Calligraphers exhibited in Paris at the Galerie Colette Allendy. A few years before Pierre Soulages' journey, Guillaume Corneille was a pioneer in the dialogue with the Japanese avant-garde. Together with Pierre Alechinsky he introduced the contemporary Japanese scene into the Parisian Abstraction Lyrique movement. An admirer of ancestral cultures, Guillaume Corneille adopted Japanese gestures in black and white ink between 1954 and 1959, which can often be read as mineral landscapes. In the 1950s, Guillaume Corneille was also friends with Christian Dotremont, who created his famous logograms. Frame made during the artist's lifetime with Atelier Corneille stamp on the back.
