After teacher training and three years as a teacher, Dieter Leuenberger (*1951) started studying art history. Because the self-taught artist had early success with his paintings, he quit his studies in 1978 and concentrated exclusively on painting. He lives and works in Zurich.

Dieter Leuenberger's almost photorealistic images convey in an apparent postcard idyll the presence of people who, however, have long ago said goodbye to the place of the event. In this apocalyptic atmosphere, nature rages around the ubiquitous traces of civilization. It is these details that give the images a certain recognisability. But the second time you look at it, the scenes are disturbing, as the artist invades these abandoned spaces with new, sometimes bizarre elements, evoking a loneliness that could hardly be more painful – and fascinating at the same time. Because if at first glance the perfect representation of the supposedly intact environment catches your attention, at the second look the human remains make you think: what happened? How was it? Where is this going? And from Dieter Leuenberger's 'destinies', stories arise that arise from his own experiences and can always take a different turn.
