Ernst Vijlbrief CoBrA style painting, sixties

The powerful work “Snake in wonderland” by Ernst Vijlbrief (1938-2010).
The expressive brushstrokes are typical of the Vijlbrief style and connect him to CoBrA and the expressive action paintings of Karel Appel. This small work is a good example of the early style of Vijlbrief and a highly collectible. Signed in the upper corner and signed, dated and titled on the reverse.

Ernst Vijlbrief, born on 25 November 1934, studied in Utrecht at the Institute for Applied Art Education in Amsterdam and at the University Day of Porta Romana in Florence (1956-1959). In the late fifties, after moving to Amsterdam in 1958, he painted in an expressive style, comparable to CoBrA. In 1961 he took part in the major exhibition “Younger Dutch Painters, Sculptors and Architects: League of New Images” in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

In addition to his work as an artist, Vijlbrief was an involved board member of various artists' associations, such as the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Association of Visual Artists). In 1973, together with artist Bob Bonies, he founded Bond van Beeldende Kunstarbeiders (BBKA) in Utrecht. His work is held in collections at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Kunstgalerie van Ferens. Vijlbrief died in 2010 at the age of 76.
