Eugène Brands - Put on Rhei

Offered is a unique and special gouache on paper by Eugene Brands. The work is from 1962 and hand-painted. The painting is entitled Pantha rei, which means 'everything flows'. What makes the work unique is the relatively large dimensions of the gouache, namely 38.5x47cm. The work is framed in an aluminum frame for conservation purposes. The passe-partout does not cover the work, so the sides of the painted work are still beautifully visible. Very small pin holes can be seen in the four corners.

What makes the work a collector's item is the moment in which the work was painted. The work is dated verso 1962. Around this period, Brands' work changed from COBRA motifs, consisting of mythical creatures, to a style called lyrical-abstract. Under the influence of American abstract expressionism, abstraction returned to Eugene Brands' work around 1960. His canvases became larger and the way of painting more woolly. The mystery of the universe, a central theme in his work, was prominently present. He began to paint vibrant areas of color in soft poetic colors, an impenetrable cottony substance. The work offered is an early work from Brand's lyrical-abstract period.

The work was sold at the time for 6000 guilders. The work is currently privately owned. Due to its dating at the beginning of Brands' lyrical-abstract period, it is possible that a greater value can be attributed to the work than to later works by Brands in the same style. Works with the title Pantha rei, dated 1961, hang in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (Object no. A 20556). Renowned art dealers ask amounts of well over € 4000 for similar works.
