Framed W. 32.5 x H. 42.5 cm. The graphic artist Gerard van Rooy (1939-2006) lived and worked in Utrecht all his life. In the 1960s, Gerard van Rooy was included in the Utrecht Grafisch Gezelschap De Luis and played a prominent role in it. With De Luis he has had many exhibitions at home and abroad for fifteen years. From 1968 to 1972, Van Rooy taught Graphic Subjects at the Artibus academy in Utrecht. From the mid-1970s onwards, Gerard van Rooy increasingly exhibited his work alone or together with a fellow artist selected by him for this occasion. Between the late eighties and the mid-nineties he made a ceramic foray.
Van Rooy is widely praised for his high technical perfection. He often combines different techniques on one record. During the last thirty years of his life he mainly used a subdued and poetic style. The objects in these prints are simple: a shell, a dead animal, a brush, a rope, a feather, a toy. The objects often take on an abstract meaning in the prints. Van Rooy speaks of "a reflection of my inner world". In 2007 the beautiful monograph Gerard van Rooy, etcher was published, containing an extensive catalog raisonné. The Centraal Museum organized a retrospective exhibition in response to this. Van Rooy's graphic oeuvre consists of more than 300 prints. In addition, there are an estimated two hundred ceramic works, which were partly made by Van Rooy in co-production with artist Gert de Rijk. Work by Gerard de Rooy is included in the collection of the Centraal Museum.
