Gré Noot was born in 1914 in Enschede. The father was a bicycle dealer, the mother died when she was nine years old. At the age of 21, she married a warehouse worker and had five children. In addition to housework, she has almost always worked and even graduated from high school. She divorced in 1961 and remarried the goldsmith Cornelis Noot in 1964. That year she also stopped working as head of housekeeping at a well-known hotel. At this farewell she received a painting box as a gift. People thought that she must have talent, because her bouquets were always so beautifully arranged. A first exhibition followed in 1970. Gre Noot is a very emotional person, with a great sense of justice and beauty. She feels a certain kinship with Vincent van Gogh, for whom the popular and religious also played a major role. In her work, which is mainly characterized by bright colors, she tells about the folklore of her province, the wonder of nature and her interest in the Bible because of the person of Jesus. She has often complained that she paints "so roughly" and that she cannot master certain plastic problems. However, her emotional touch makes her work extremely lively and convincing. For several years now she has enjoyed experimenting and has also created more abstract, symbolic works based on nature.
