Guido de Waart can look back on an extensive and varied oeuvre, which testifies to a consistent vision of his visual work, to invention, to originality and to a great work ethic.
After his education at the Rotterdam Academy in the publicity department, he developed into an independent artist. In the first years, working in advertising and giving lessons formed the basis for his livelihood. As soon as he could make ends meet by selling his autonomous work, he stopped working in advertising and also gave up teaching at the HBS in Zaltbommel. Later, he was asked by the then director Pierre Janssen to teach students at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, which he continued to do for twenty years to his own satisfaction and that of his students.
The same formal language can be recognized in everything he makes. They are paintings, drawings, etchings, linocuts and lithographs, objects of flat glass, treated with sandblasting and objects of paper, glued layer upon layer to form solid objects that often look formidable and heavy, but are in reality as light as a feather. This diversity reveals a great interest in the technical aspects of artistry. He works in large and small formats. The square format as an image carrier becomes his starting point, because he no longer allows himself to be constrained by the varying paper formats of the Japanese paper with which he has worked a lot up to then. The square is not limiting for him, but a grammar for an almost inexhaustible formal language with ever-changing techniques and therefore diverse manifestations.
