Silkscreen by Henk van der Plas from 1988. Abstract composition. Number: 18/300.
Henk JAM van der Plas
Born: The Hague
Education: Royal Academy of Art
Henk van der Plas belonged to the so-called Hague 'The Group' of constructivists. In 1962 Henk van der Plas worked in Paris. Two years later - back in The Hague - he devoted himself to making paintings and linocuts with organic motifs. He made beach assemblages from driftwood, rope and cork. Tight shapes, experiments with light and shadow, tight compositions and geometric shapes have dominated and characterised the work of Henk van der Plas for many years. However, this changed after several visits to Suriname. The artist became fascinated by the tropical atmosphere and the splendour of the nature of Suriname; the overwhelming colours of the plants, flowers and seeds that he found there. From that moment on Henk van der Plas changed his way of working radically.
