• Jacob Zekveld (Rotterdam, March 22, 1945 – ibid., June 2002) was a Dutch painter, (pen)drawer, graphic artist and collagist.

Life and work Zekveld came from a merchant family, he was a son of Jacob Zekveld (1910-1973) and Adriana Staleman (1907-1980). He studied for two years at the Hague Free Academy, but largely formed himself. He is considered, together with Woody van Amen, Gustave Asselbergs, Daan van Golden, Wim Gijzen and Reinier Lucassen, to be among the artists of the New Figuration; he painted and drew animals, people and fairy-tale scenes in a pop art style. He also made collages, lithographs and silkscreens. Art critic Piet Begeer described Zekveld as "a passionate storyteller and at the same time naive and refined" and wrote about his work: "Zekveld's art is a narrative art. The subjects are taken from everyday events, from mixed messages in the newspaper, from fairy tales and typical historical events. They are told in an unsuspecting, strikingly personal way with a humorous slant; a satirical element is not addressed, not even where it would more or less be expected." Zekveld made his debut in 1962 with an exhibition of paintings and graphics at Kriterion in Rotterdam. In 1965 he exhibited with Van Amen, Lucassen and Gijzen at Hans Sonnenberg's Galerie Delta, where they were announced as the four child prodigies.[5] Sonnenberg took on the role of manager and had the gentlemen exhibit more often in his gallery.[6] He gave the opening speech at Zekveld's exhibition in De Mangelgang in Groningen (1965), where he described Zekveld as "one of those young people who paints the new reality of the changing world. (...) He is a creative guy, with crazy jokes. Fortunately, because that gives reality, as you can see, a new color." In 1967 Zekveld was invited with Jacques van der Heijden and Henk Huig to participate in the 15th Premio Lissone in Italy. A year later he was allowed to participate - as the only Dutchman - in the Premio Lignano. In 1970 he made a short film with the writer Jacobus P. Bos. He illustrated Bos' publications Niemand is iemands vriend (1972) and Keesje in Nederland (1974). Zekveld has received several prizes and subsidies: he received the Royal Subsidy for Free Painting three times (1967, 1968, 1970). Zekveld and Age Klink were each awarded a silver medal at the European Prize for Painting of the City of Ostend (1971). In 1971 he received a travel grant from the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Social Work and in 1989 the Work Grant Visual Arts from the Ministry of Welfare, Public Health and Culture. Zekveld's work is included in the collections of, among others, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Jacob Zekveld died in June 2002,[10] he was 57 years old. In 2016, the exhibition The Spirit of Zekveld was held at Galerie Delta, in which Arie van Geest paid tribute to Zekveld.
