JWAAM (Jac) Mels was born in Tilburg in 1899. At a young age he left for Curaçao to work as a teacher. He also visited Venezuela and Brazil. As an artist he was self-taught. He made many landscapes and cityscapes, had a preference for watercolor and ink drawing, and his style is expressionistic in a graceful style, often with dark colors. Within the Netherlands he worked a lot in Limburg and Brabant. He died in 1974
