  • Schouten, Jan (pseudonym: Jan Hadris; Rotterdam 5 Jan. 1906 – Gouda 6 June 1987), priest, visual artist, art historian, writer. Studied theology and philosophy in Nijmegen, was ordained as a priest in 1934 and began his career as a religious education teacher in Eindhoven. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tilburg. In 1949 he left his monastic order and established himself as a (glass) painter in Gouda and became director of the municipal museums there in 1956. In 1959 he graduated in art history from the State University of Utrecht and obtained his doctorate in 1963 from the State University of Leiden. His publications include: Gouda, Vroeger en Nu (1969), Gouda van sluis tot sluis (1977) and Dehonderdjarige Goudse Waterleidingmaatschappij NV 1883-1983 (1983). Ref.: NBK, P.
