Special edition, also interesting for Belgian art lovers! Vada map “From the collection of Jean Baptiste Madou” - .

At the turn of the year 1968-1969, publisher Gebr. Zomers en Keuning (Vada printing house) in close collaboration with the Amsterdam Historical Museum, published a folder with 6 loose drawings by Jean Baptiste Madou, executed in the copper intaglio printing process. It was a limited edition exclusively for relations of the publisher/printer. It was the last in a series, after publications about Vincent van Gogh, Isaac Israëls, Jan Toorop and Dick Ket.

Jean-Baptiste Madou (Brussels, (3 February 1796 – 3 April 1877) was a well-known and popular Belgian painter, illustrator, lithographer and etcher. He was also a pioneer in the field of lithography.
On the back of each engraving is mentioned the drawing number of the Vada map, the origin and the printing process. The copper intaglio prints are in fine condition. The map itself has some traces of time.

After 55 years, these folders have become rare and of antiquarian significance.

About copper intaglio printing (also called rotogravure).
Intaglio printing is a fascinating and versatile printing technique with a rich history and a wide range of applications. Such as the copper intaglio printing presses that Drukkerij Vada had between 1962 and 1981. A graphic printing technique in which the design is engraved on a copper printing cylinder. This process offered a unique combination of precision, detail and texture that is difficult to imitate with other printing techniques. The costs of intaglio printing are very high for small editions, because engraving the cylinder was very expensive.
