Johannes Greeve was a Dutch painter, born in Haarlem in 1850 and died in The Hague in 1923. He lived and worked at a time when the Hague School was influential, an art movement that focused on realistic and often melancholic depictions of the Dutch landscape. Although Greeve himself was not a prominent figure within this movement, his paintings did show influences of the style. His work consisted mainly of landscapes and cityscapes, in which he paid special attention to light and atmosphere, which was typical of many painters of that period. Greeve's landscapes often show vast meadows and typical Dutch skies, with a sense of space and tranquility. In addition, he painted urban scenes that evoked an almost romantic atmosphere, with an eye for detail and the daily reality of city life.
