Johannis Hartung (Berlin 1942) is originally a graphic designer and his experience with product design is clearly reflected in his work. Starting from the flat, he develops his illusion of plasticity by translating grids of lines into a body-forming structure of dots. In his pictorial objects he very consciously goes beyond the actual surface, emphasized by chromed metal frames, thus creating an illusion between two- or three-dimensionality. This is his artistic trademark. For Hartung, flamenco is a kind of elementary rhythmic force and individually experienced catharsis. With this in mind, he has continued to develop his flamenco graphics and flamenco objects (the guitar in this work) made in the Andalusian colors, his 'display art', as he calls it. The dotted patterns of the tight-fitting garments of flamenco dancers have inspired a series of 'body objects' on which he has been working since 1976.
