Biography:
Maurice Goth (Szatmar, 1873 - 1944, Amsterdam) was born in Hungary. He studied in Munich, Vienna and Paris at the Académie Julian. He travelled extensively with his family. In 1914, they were on holiday on the Belgian coast when they were surprised by the outbreak of the First World War. They fled to neutral Netherlands and settled in Domburg. Here, Goth was accepted into the Zeeland circle of artists around Jan Toorop. Goth painted in a powerful impressionist style: landscapes, village and cityscapes, portraits and still lifes. In 1929, he settled permanently in Veere with his family, although he regularly made long journeys. He received the Hungarian Prix de Rome, among other awards. Goth was a member of the artists' association "Arti et Amicitiae". He died in Amsterdam. His work is represented in the collections of the Hague Municipal Museum, the Drents Museum Assen and the Centraal Museum Utrecht, among others.
