    Designer information:
Otto 'Otl' Aicher (Ulm, May 13, 1922 - Günzburg, September 1, 1991) was one of the leading German graphic designers of the 20th century.
In 1953, Aicher, together with Inge Scholl and Max Bill, founded the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm in Ulm, one of Germany's leading educational centres for design during the 1950s and 1960s.
As a graphic designer, Aicher was responsible for the corporate design and logo of the German airline Lufthansa in 1969. In 1972, as chief designer of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he designed the logo and the mascot, named Waldi. He also designed the pictograms for the various sports at the Games, and new pictograms for the information system at Frankfurt Airport. These symbols were later used all over the world.

    - From Wikipedia : “The Munich Games were supposed to be above all cheerful Games. In this way, the German organizers hoped to erase the memories of the dubious 1936 edition in Berlin. The first week was also an exemplary sporting festival. However, this was brutally interrupted on September 5, when a number of Palestinian fighters from the organization Black September stormed the Israeli shelter at Connollystrasse 31 in the Olympic village. The Palestinians killed two Israelis and took nine members of the Israeli team hostage.
After long negotiations, during which Black September demanded the release of a large number of Palestinian and other political prisoners, a failed rescue operation took place at the Fürstenfeldbruck military airport. All nine hostages, a policeman and five Palestinians were killed.
