  • Pieter Zwaanswijk is self-taught. He has been involved in visual arts in the broadest sense of the word since 1967. After various exhibitions, he started the Juteproject in Haarlem in the early 1970s. A monthly exhibition that responded to current events, for which he was supported by the government, the province of North Holland and the municipality of Haarlem. Later he exhibited frequently in the Vide, the Vishal and the Vleeshal, De Fietsznfabriek and in his own Jan en Piet Museum at Dijkstraat 10. He also exhibited at De SBK in Haarlem, Sophie's Place in Utrecht and in the Sidac Studio in Leiden, among others. In 2004 he designed the 'meeting point' for the Haarlemmerhout Festival. In the same year, an installation of his was on display in the Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, where he also gave performances with the Juteproject. In 1997 Piet Zwaanswijk received the Golden Elephant, the cultural prize of the municipality of Haarlem. In 2006 he received a medal for his oeuvre and was knighted in the Order of Orange-Nassau. That same year he also received the Jannie Sipkes Prize. In 2006 Piet made the installation Gevangenen in beeld in the St. Bavo in Haarlem and in 2007 a solo exhibition of his work was on display in the Kunstcentrum Haarlem. In recent years Piet Zwaanswijk has also been the driving force behind theatre group Badmuts. In 2007 and 2009 this resulted in the collaboration with theatre group Het Volk. In 2007 the Toneelschuur in Haarlem performed the play De Aardappelmaker and in 2009 Far Away by him, as the closing piece of the theatre season. At the time the artist called himself Pieter “Morris” Zwaanswijk (PM) instead of Pieter Zwaanswijk. Since he started working closely with Jan Heijer, he even calls himself just Piet, because of e.g.; “Just ask Jan and Piet, then everything will be fine”.
