Rene De Coninck - Clean Antwerp - Sold

Rare etching by the Belgian painter, graphic artist and illustrator René De Coninck (1907 – 1978). He was the fifth child in a family of six. His mother, who herself had a talent for drawing, died after the birth of the sixth child. As a child, René showed an early interest in drawing and inherited this passion from his mother. During his youth he had contact with artists such as James Ensor and Constant Permeke. After his training in England, De Coninck returned to Belgium. He took classes at the Brussels Academy and was taught by graphic artists such as Jules de Bruycker and Louis Peeters. His first etchings, such as “Fanfare” and “Maagtribulatiën”, were created in that period. Unfortunately, a large part of this pre-war oeuvre was lost when his home was hit by V-bombs in 1944. In 1946, De Coninck was appointed etching teacher at the Antwerp Academy. He taught several generations of graphic artists, including Maurice Van den Dries, Frans Köhler, Paul Van Hoeydonck and others. As a teacher, he was known for his independent spirit and technical expertise. He gave his students freedom in their artistic development. In 1954 René De Coninck was appointed knight in the Order of the Crown. His work is characterized by influences of magical realism, fantasy and surrealism. His subjects show similarities with artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Hieronymus Bosch and Jules De Bruycker.
