Mackaay grew up in Utrecht. In 1970 he started training as a stonemason there and laid the foundation to develop himself further as a sculptor. He studied from 1972 to 1976 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and from 1977 to 1979 at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.
Sculptor and painterSince 1980 he has worked as an independent artist, both as a sculptor and as a painter. Mackaay's style can be described as deforming figurative, with sources of inspiration including Pablo Picasso, Marino Marini and Ossip Zadkine. In 1980 he designed the Golden Calf, the trophy awarded during the Dutch Film Festival. The trophy awarded by the BV Popprijs is also a design by Mackaay from 1984. Other prizes he designed include the incentive prize for companies for employing chronically ill people (1996) and a prize for the Xena foundation (2002).
In 2005 he traveled to China, where he would work for 2.5 years, resulting in several large bronze sculptures.
Mackaay exhibits at home and abroad and has had several solo exhibitions in venues including Morren Galleries in Amsterdam and Utrecht, the Carlton Hotel in Cannes (2015) and the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam (2016).
MusicianBesides being a visual artist, Mackaay is also a musician. In the 1970s, he was a guitarist and singer in Lenny Kuhr's backing group. Since the late 1970s, he has been a singer, guitarist and composer in the socially critical Dutch-language group Braak,[1] with which he made four LPs: Demo's , Suite voor een Hypochonder , Heldenkermis and Ik weet wat je lust . He played as a singer and guitarist in studio sessions and could be heard in commercials. In 2016, his album Met de hemel weet je het nooit uit was released.
