Tom Hunter’s (*1965 in Dorset) meticulously composed, painterly scenes work on several levels: for one, he references important paintings from art history; for another, he tells us stories about our times – stories that all take place in the London borough of Hackney, where Hunter lives. Perhaps his best-known photograph is of a young woman in a setting that references Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window. Hunter’s photograph, however, shows a woman reading a possession notice – a neighbour from the squatter’s locality who has just been given an eviction notice. The work attracted so much media attention that the eviction never actually took place.
