The etching is in reasonable condition, the edges are somewhat stained (presumably due to the glue from the tape used), as a result of which the signature (pencil) has become virtually invisible.

Walter UAES (1882-1958) is an artist born in 1882. The oldest auction result ever recorded on the website for an artwork by this artist is a painting sold in 1986, at Christie's, and the most recent auction result is a drawing-watercolor sold in 2020 .Especially: painting, multiple prints, watercolor drawing



Walter Vaes was a painter, watercolourist, draftsman and etcher of portraits, figures, landscapes and still lifes. He received his training at the Academy of Antwerp and in 1904 he won the Prix de Rome at the age of 22.
He made an extensive study trip to Italy but also visited many other countries such as Germany, Austria, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon.
During the First World War he fled to Veere. In 1918 he returned to Antwerp where in 1924 he was appointed as a lecturer at the Higher Institute of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He remained there until his retirement in 1949.
Vaes was co-founder of and participant in the exhibitions of “Eenigen” (1902), “Kunst van Heden” (1905) and “La Gravure Originale Belge” (1928).
