Willem Hendrik Eickelberg was never widely known as a painter. He was born in Amsterdam in 1845 and was also educated there at the Royal Academy. He then painted landscapes, city and beach views in a beginning impressionism. His winter landscapes are occasionally highly romantically idealized, but he also paints cityscapes and beach views with ships that provide a more current image of his time.
