Jack Godderis (1916-1971)

Jack Godderis (1916-1971)

Jack Godderis, born in England to Flemish parents, has been almost deaf his entire life due to an inflammation in the rock bone behind his ear. It hasn't stopped him from making big trips. Right after graduating from high school, he visits South America, England, Mexico, the United States and the Antilles, alone and with his father, who was a captain of the tramp shipping. Later he wanders through Russia, Iran, Switzerland, France, Greece, Morocco, Canada and again the United States. He records all kinds of things that affect him along the way in small sketchbooks and later turns them into oil paintings on canvas or paper. He received his artistic training at the Royal Academy and at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He reveals himself as a co-founder of inspired groups of artists. His work is frequently exhibited at home and abroad and numerous prizes have been awarded to him, including the Prix de l'art Jeune in 1942 (with a still life), the Belgian Grand Prize for Painting in 1951 and the international prize of Gemmail, Tours, in 1966. His work can also be seen regularly in our country. For example, the general practitioner, patron and collector Jo Nagelhout (1901-1975) based in Holten, Overijssel, organized an exhibition in the town hall of Holten in 1953 with works by Belgian painters, including Godderis, Gailliard and Slabbinck. The Nagelhout Collection still contains a crayon drawing by Godderis (source: JP Nagelhout, 2005) and until recently two gouaches, with which the artist paid for his stay, hung in Hotel Vosman, but since the catering company changed hands, they have disappeared. .Jack Godderis is counted among the Flemish expressionists, but he comes to a personal approach, in which he indulges in colours. A colourist whose palette is at the service of maximum pictorial expressiveness, says the catalog accompanying the retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (1986). Godderis's work is included in the collections of various national and international museums and in those of the Belgian State and the Belgian Royal House. The powerful appearance of this still life with its violently 'colliding' colors on an intense blue background remains with us intrigue!
