Jan van Vuuren (1871-1941)

Jan van Vuuren was born in Molenaarsgraaf in 1871 as the son of the workman Arie van Vuuren and Teuntje Vlot. After taking lessons with the Dordrecht painter Roland Larij, he studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He was also taught by Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof and Herman van der Weele, among others. At the age of 25 he joined Pulchri Studio. From 1894 he was a member of Arti et Amicitiae. In 1891 he was awarded the Academy Prize (gold medal) of the Haagsche Academie [1]. Van Vuuren was awarded the 'Diplome d'honneur' at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900.[2]

Van Vuuren worked and lived in Dordrecht, Amsterdam, The Hague, Elspeet, Epe, Elburg and Lochem. In 1903 he settled permanently in Nunspeet, where he died in 1941 (at that time the municipality of Ermelo). In Nunspeet he was part of the Kunstkring Nunspeet, where he had contact with Jos Lussenburg, Arthur Briet, Frans Huysmans and Edzard Koning. He taught among others Theodora Elisabeth Wolterbeek Muller.
