Kantcho KANEV
Painter, graphic artist.
Born in Ruse (Bulgaria) in 1957.
Education:
Kanev was educated in Ruse where he was a student of Kiril Stanchev.
Lives and works in The Hague.
The importance of mythology in the work of Kanev, who has lived in the Netherlands since 1990, is great: it is his source for finding a contemporary visual worldview. Old traditions of religious art are present in the abstract art with which Kanev portrays a spiritual identity and individual history. He poetically brings together visual symbols, segmented memories and natural phenomena into a harmonious whole that gives an almost musical impression. This is how Kanev creates his own world; the colors in his work easily take you there.
Exhibitions and prizes:
In addition to exhibitions in Bulgaria and the Netherlands, Kanev's work has been exhibited in Belgium, Spain, Romania, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. In the 90s, Kanev received a number of awards. In 1992 and 1993 he won Bulgaria two prizes. In 1995 he won a prize from the Japanese Tama Art University and in 1996 he won the main prize at the Biennale of Graphic Art in Romania.
