Education:
Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was a Portuguese French painter. She studied at the Academia de Belas – Artez in Lisbon. At first she took sculpture lessons at the academy, but soon switched to the painting department. Vieira da Silva leaves in 1928 with her mother for Paris and also attends art education there. In 1933 she has her first solo exhibition in Paris.
The early work of Vieira da Silva still bears the stamp of surrealism, later work is more abstract with a mythological character and lines. Her work is considered part of the art movement (Nouvelle) Ecole de Paris.
In 1940 she emigrated with her husband to Brazil, and had several exhibitions there. Vieira da Silva carried out assignments by illustrating books, designing stained glass windows and tapestries. In 1994 the Fundação Arpad Szenes Vieira da Silva opened a museum in Lisbon with a large collection of works by both artists.
Her works have been exhibited all over the world, Paris, London, New York, Brazil, but also in the Netherlands, including the Boymans van Beuningen museum.
