First Dutch Free Studio

The Eerste Nederlandse Vrije Studio was an institution in The Hague where artists came together and where lessons were given in the evenings. The idea of the First Dutch Free Studio came from the Academies Libres that were very successful in Paris. This was an institution that focused on the artistic freedom of the students, for individuality and a sense of community. A good work of art was made with the soul, according to the Academies Libres. In the Netherlands, the Vrije Studio was also an immediate success. Here they could experiment with new design and new visual language and thus develop their own identity. Anyone could register, both professionals and amateurs worked together. The Vrije Studio closed because of the Second World War and the German occupation. After the Second World War, the Vrije Studio was continued as the Vrije Academie, which was founded in 1947 and was still active until a few years ago.
