Beautiful watercolor by van den Brandeler in heavy quality aluminum frame.
Agnes van den Brandeler studied briefly at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague during the war years. The fact that she was expelled from the academy, as she later liked to say, was not least due to her stubbornness. This idiosyncrasy also characterizes her work. She really got going during a first visit to Paris in 1947. What is striking about the landscapes and interiors she painted there are the smooth touch and the light un-Dutch colors. Back in the Netherlands, her work was not only well received by the critics, but also with a certain surprise. The trip to France was the beginning of a long period of travel that would last until the late 1960s. In addition to her stays in France, her stays in Spain, Italy and Greece have also left their mark on her oeuvre.
